East Williston Celebrates Successful Memorial Day 5k
By Sharon Piscopia
The village of East Williston hosted its annual Memorial Day 5k, bringing together community members for a day of fitness and remembrance. The event, which took place on a beautiful spring morning, saw 78 runners of all ages and abilities participate in the race through the village’s neighborhoods.
Starting and ending at Devlin Field, this year's race was particularly special, as it included a Kids Fun Run, making it a perfect outing for the whole family. Friends and families cheered on the runners and walkers.
Volunteers played a crucial role in making the event safe and enjoyable. The dedicated team included Sharon Piscopia, Binsy Geevargh, Binsy Geevargh, Village Trustee Rafaella Dunne, Village Clerk Joanna Palumbo and many other community members were essential to the event's success. Several volunteers served as corner watchers to give directions and ensure participants' safety.
Trophies and medals were awarded by age group at the Village Green Memorial Day Ceremony. The festive atmosphere was enhanced with refreshments and music, creating a fun and memorable experience for all attendees.
Looking ahead, East Williston is already planning next year's Memorial Day 5K and is seeking more volunteers to help make the event even better. The team needs assistance with tasks such as placing race course arrows, organizing flag and vest/corner watchers, timing (six timers needed), and helping with the Fun Run (two helpers needed). Students who volunteer can earn community service hours.
