East Williston Little League Opening Day

This past weekend marked an extraordinary occasion for the East Williston community as the Little League Opening Day unfolded at The Wheatley School grounds. The atmosphere was electric, brimming with the spirit of camaraderie, family, and the sheer joy of sport.

With a turnout that surpassed expectations, with more than 345 boys and girls proudly represented the East Williston Little League (EWLL), a testament to the program's significance within the community. The occasion was the sight of countless families coming together to cheer on their young athletes that truly defined the day.

The festivities commenced with an adorable parade, from the littlest athletes in pre-K to 7th grade, setting the stage for a day filled with memorable moments. Amidst the excitement, the EWLL took the opportunity to honor its seasoned baseball and softball players, who had embarked on their journey from T-Ball to senior level.

From the littles throwing out the first pitch to their senior counterparts, served as a reminder of the league's legacy and the bonds it fosters across generations.

“Looking out and seeing the tremendous community support, along with the little ones marching with nervous smiles across their faces is the best part of the day,” said Anthony Sparacia, President of EWLL.

“My best memories growing up were built around my little league experiences,” he said.

There is a lot of gratitude towards the dedicated volunteers – the moms and dads who selflessly serve as coaches, the EWLL and EWSD Board, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing the event to fruition.

“I believe the connection between EWLL , our students and coaches is what makes our baseball community what it is,” said Sparacia. “We create the foundation that leads kids to continue to love baseball.”

The Little League has evolved over the years, it started as a BBQ at Northside Elementary and bounce houses for the kids.

“Anthony, the board members, and previous EWLL president Tom McCauley, as well as the coaches had the idea of incorporating the Varsity baseball and softball teams because those kids have been involved since Little League and T-ball,” said Bernadette Quinn, who’s two sons grew up in the district playing baseball.

Recognition was also extended to the generous sponsors whose support ensured the success of each team and the parade. Special mention for Center Cuts, 388, Frantoni’s, Dangelo’s and Joanne’s Variety, whose contributions added to the festivities, alongside the tireless efforts of the grilling dads who kept hungry kids at bay throughout the day.

The highlight, however, was not merely the games and victories but the sense of community where bonds were strengthened, memories were made, and the collective spirit of East Williston thrived.

Amidst celebrating the start of the season, appreciation was directed towards those who captured the essence of the day. Ben Low, the in-house student photographer took snaps of the young athletes, and Maiya Vohra's rendition of the National Anthem added to the day's poignancy.

As the day drew to a close, one sentiment resonated above all – gratitude fostered by the East Williston community. And the East Williston Wildcats marched forward, embodying the spirit of unity and sportsmanship that defines this community.

“I’m so happy and so proud to be involved with the East Williston Little League,” said Quinn.
