Nassau County Officials Urge Residents to Prevent Car Thefts
By Chris Orlando, Police Officer, 3rd Precinct POP Unit
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder are reminding residents to take simple but effective steps to prevent auto-related thefts. The "Lock It or Lose It" campaign emphasizes the importance of locking vehicles, as thieves can enter an unlocked car and steal valuables within seconds.
Residents are advised to:
🔹 Lock their vehicles at all times
🔹 Keep valuables out of sight or in the trunk
🔹 Avoid leaving cars running and unattended
🔹 Never leave spare keys inside the vehicle
Officials warn that thieves often target unlocked luxury vehicles by checking if side mirrors are retracted, a feature that indicates the car is locked.
To report suspicious activity, call 911 for emergencies or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
