October Community Safety Alert: Catalytic Converter Thefts
By Chris Orlando, Police Officer - 3rd Precinct POP Unit
The Nassau County Police Department has issued a community alert regarding a rise in catalytic converter thefts. Catalytic converters, a key component of a car’s exhaust system, have become a prime target for thieves due to the valuable metals they contain. Thefts are typically carried out quickly, often during the overnight or early morning hours.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Signs of catalytic converter theft include observing a vehicle jacked up with an individual lying underneath it or hearing the distinct sound of metal being cut. Additionally, a double-parked vehicle or one parked unusually in the street could indicate criminal activity.
Community members are reminded to call 911 immediately if they spot suspicious behavior but are advised not to confront or attempt to apprehend suspects. By staying alert and reporting unusual activity, residents can help prevent catalytic converter thefts and keep their neighborhoods safe.
