The Firefighter Next Door: What It’s Like to Serve the Community

An Inside Look at Volunteering with the East Williston Fire Department

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter? Or how our local fire department operates behind the scenes? In this Q&A, we sit down with one of East Williston’s dedicated fire chiefs, who shares insights into what inspired him to join, the training process, and the impact volunteer firefighters have on our community.

Q&A with Tom Devaney, EWFD 1st Assistant Chief

Q. What inspired you to become a firefighter, and what do you find most rewarding about the role?

I grew up in East Williston, where several of my friends' dads were in the fire department. On my 18th birthday, I knocked on the firehouse door and was handed an application. Now, 30 years later, I’m honored to serve as one of the chiefs of this department. My inspiration came from a desire to be an active member of my community and give back. The most rewarding aspect of this job is the camaraderie among the members—they say firefighting is a brotherhood, and East Williston embodies that spirit.

Q. What are the key responsibilities of a volunteer firefighter, and how do they contribute to the community?

Volunteer firefighters are the ultimate "neighbors helping neighbors." We respond to all kinds of emergencies, from a simple trip and fall to the occasional house fire. Beyond emergency response, we are a visible presence at many village events, including the Memorial Day 5K Run, parades, and the annual holiday tree lighting. The fire department is always looking for new members—we need people who care about their community and want to lend a hand in times of need.

Q. What training and support do new volunteers receive?

Every new member receives comprehensive training at no cost. All recruits complete Firefighter I training, which includes both classroom instruction and hands-on experience at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy in Bethpage.

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds—no prior experience is required. Not every emergency looks like the action-packed scenes in movies. In reality, most calls involve a neighbor needing help, and we ensure every member is fully trained and comfortable before responding to an emergency.

Beyond Firefighter I, members can pursue additional training to become Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Emergency Vehicle Operators, or specialists in other areas of fire service. Many of our members have completed nearly every advanced training opportunity available.

Q. How does volunteering fit into a busy schedule, and what level of commitment is required?

When I first applied, I was told it was just "two hours a week"—though if you ask my wife and four boys, they’d say it’s more than that! The reality is, outside of required training (typically held in the evenings to accommodate work schedules), the commitment is flexible and depends on what you can give.

We train every Thursday from 8 PM to 10 PM, but members are not expected to attend every session—communication with your officer is key. Emergency calls are unpredictable, and while I’ve stepped away from family dinners before, no one is expected to make every call. Last year, we responded to about 150 emergencies.

Beyond training and calls, the fire department also hosts social events, making it a true fraternal organization where lifelong friendships are formed.

Q. What would you say to someone who is interested but unsure if they have what it takes?

I’d say, give it a try. Come down any Thursday evening to observe a training session and meet our team. There’s no pressure—if it’s not for you, that’s okay. But once you experience the camaraderie and purpose of being a volunteer firefighter, I think you’ll find it hard to walk away.

Beyond the friendships, there are also many benefits to volunteering, including:
✔️ Life insurance coverage
✔️ Length of Service Award Program (similar to a pension)
✔️ Annual health screenings
✔️ College tuition opportunities
✔️ Property and income tax breaks
