Get to Know Your Neighbors: Celebrating Doris Rouse's 95th Birthday
by Pat Hurleigh
Doris Rouse, a longtime resident of East Williston, celebrates her 95th birthday on June 1st.
My friend Marilyn Holland and I had the pleasure of visiting her recently to wish her an early "Happy Birthday" and to listen to her reminisce about her remarkable life.
Doris first came to East Williston in 1947 as an 18-year-old girl when her father found a piece of land across from the Wheatley Golf Course. The plot, a former potato field with a "For Sale" sign, captivated her father, who immediately decided to build a house there and joined the golf course. He also planted three trees: two maples and an oak, the latter of which still stands tall today.
Doris fondly remembers the friendly and tight-knit neighborhood, with frequent gatherings and social events. It was through these connections that her brother met and married a local girl.
At 18, Doris attended Hofstra University, aspiring to become a doctor. However, societal expectations at the time encouraged her to pursue a career in teaching. She secured her first job at Mineola Public Schools, teaching first grade at Cross Street School for 25 years. Following the school's closure and transformation into the Nassau Police Academy, Doris transferred to Meadow Drive School, where she continued to teach first grade for another 25 years.
Doris enjoys reading Newsday daily, staying informed about local news, and engaging in crossword and word search puzzles. She also loves watching TV and discussing her favorite shows with friends and her aide, Winnie.
Here's to Doris—happy birthday and thank you for sharing your wonderful stories with us!
