East Williston Baseball and Softball All-Star Sendoff: A Night Under the Lights
Last Friday night, the East Williston community came together to celebrate and support their local East Williston Little League baseball and softball teams with a grand sendoff event under the lights. The atmosphere was electric as close to 200 people showed up to cheer on the athletes and enjoy an evening filled with camaraderie, excitement, and delicious food.
“We began the ‘Send Off All Star’ during Covid to honor the kids that have played EWLL since T-ball,” said Anthony Sparacia, President of EWLL. “After seeing the outpouring of community support, we decided to keep it this way and continue to honor our boys and girls who are committed to EWLL. What a way to end their EWLL careers, going out as All Stars.”
The event featured plenty of activities and treats for everyone in attendance. Pizza and ice-cream were served, and families and friends gathered around, sharing laughter and stories as they anticipated the games ahead.
“The greatest pleasure is watching these girls grow from when they started at T-ball/Farms League to the young athletes they have become," said Shawn Dooley, Coach for the girl’s Black team and one of the Coaches of the 7th Grade Team for the season.
The girls' softball team took to the field first. First baseman Liana Harwell starting the night for the Red Team with a nice hit to the outfield for a double and also caught a nice line drive, according to Dooley.
“Star pitchers Kate Park (Red Team) and Natalia Iglesias (Black Team) pitched their hearts out the whole game,” said Dooley.
Short stop for the Red Team Sofia Negovetti made a nice catch to end the inning and Black Team scoring in the 4rth. Short Stop for the Black Team Alexa Russo made an amazing double play to end the game. The girls were ultimately defeated but played a great game
As the night continued, the boys' baseball team stepped up to the plate. Their hard work and dedication paid off, securing a thrilling win. A highlight was Dante Kortcamp hitting a grand slam at the bottom of the 3rd.
“I have been coaching in this league for 17 years and have been on the board for the past several years. I can say beyond a shadow of doubt that this is one of the best Little League celebrations anywhere,” said Tony Spera, coach of the boys Majors baseball team and EWLL board member.
The sendoff event was more than just a series of games; it was a testament to the strong community spirit and support between the residents and their local teams. The night under the lights will be remembered as a celebration of sportsmanship, community, and the unwavering support of East Williston for its athletes.
“Seeing our community cheer these players on, many who have been with us since kindergarten is very special. Seeing the joy on the kids’ faces as their names were announced with their teammates is priceless," said Spera. “This is my last year coaching in the league and getting to share this moment with all these players and coaches will be remembered forever.”
