Getting to Know Our Neighbors: Iris Capocasale – A Life of Stories, Laughter, and Love
By Elise Vaidya
On one of the many evenings I’ve spent sharing dinner and conversation with my wonderful neighbor, Iris Capocasale, I took the opportunity to sit down with her and learn even more about her incredible journey.
A Childhood of Innovation and Adventure
Iris fondly recalls growing up in Brooklyn and Queens, surrounded by a tight-knit community and a family that thrived on creativity and hard work. Her father owned a radio and TV store, specializing in fixing tube televisions, and she still vividly remembers the day her family gathered in the store to watch The Wizard of Oz on a color TV for the first time—a magical moment.
Her mother, a homemaker with an eye for fashion, worked seasonally in department stores. Iris shared stories of attending the 1964 World’s Fair, a grand spectacle of the time, and taking train rides with her grandfather to the city to visit Horn & Hardart, where they would grab sandwiches and drinks from the iconic automat.
A Love Story Written in Letters
As a young woman, Iris attended Queens College while working as a legal secretary at a Manhattan law firm. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Louis, through mutual friends. Though they didn’t know each other well before Louis was deployed to Vietnam, they exchanged letters regularly, their connection deepening with each message. When Louis returned home, their bond grew stronger, leading to a marriage that spanned 37 years and brought them a son and two grandsons.
Finding Home in East Williston
In 1986, Iris and Louis made the life-changing decision to move to East Williston, drawn by the welcoming community and excellent schools. They were quickly embraced by their new neighborhood, attending a country-themed party soon after their arrival—complete with square dancing and a chili cook-off hosted by the volunteer fire department.
She fondly remembers bringing her son to the toddler park, greeting Louis at the train station after work, and even dressing up as the Easter Bunny one year, calling children by name to make the holiday extra special.
A Love for the Beach and Building a Community
Iris and her family also became active members of a beach club, where she formed lifelong friendships and deepened her love for the ocean. To this day, she eagerly participates in club events and gatherings, cherishing the camaraderie and joy it brings. As she flipped through photos of her and her “cabana-mates” dressed up for themed parties, it was clear that laughter and friendship have been central to her life.
A Passion for Real Estate and Connecting with People
In 1988, inspired by her love for the community, Iris became a realtor, finding fulfillment in helping families buy and sell homes. She treasures the stories behind each house, often reflecting on the memories created within them. With every client, she takes the time to understand their lifestyle and needs, ensuring they find a home that truly fits. Through her work, she has built lasting relationships with countless neighbors.
Beyond real estate, Iris works part-time at a local physical therapy office, where she continues to greet and connect with members of the community, further strengthening the bonds she has nurtured over the years.
An Active and Adventurous Spirit
Never one to sit still, Iris enjoys walking through the neighborhood, keeping up with her next-door neighbor’s toddler, and staying engaged in the community. Outside of East Williston, her love for travel has taken her to Italy, Paris, Amsterdam, Greece, Turkey, and beyond. Whether she’s cruising the seas, catching a Broadway show, or enjoying a weekend getaway, she embraces every adventure with enthusiasm.
A Neighbor Who Spreads Joy
Known for her warmth, humor, and kindness, Iris is the type of person who makes everyone feel welcome. Whether she’s playing mahjong, chatting with a neighbor, or reminiscing over a good meal, her joy is infectious.
If you ever cross paths with Iris Capocasale, stop and say hello—you’ll likely leave with a smile and a story to tell. She is truly the heart of East Williston, embodying the spirit of community, connection, and lifelong memories.
