North Side School’s Mock Election Engages Students in Democracy

By Williston Post Staff

On November 4, North Side School at the East Williston Union Free School District brought democracy to life for its students through a spirited mock election. Tasked with choosing the theme for their upcoming School Spirit Day, young voters learned firsthand how their voices can shape their community.

Each student received a ballot and entered a voting booth to select from fun options like Dress Like a Teacher Day, Wacky Hair Day, Character Day, Superhero Day, and Favorite Food Day. Adding to the experience, parent volunteers served as poll workers, handing out “I Voted” stickers to each participant as a symbol of their civic engagement.

“This activity fosters civic engagement, responsibility, and the understanding of voting as a way to express preferences and make collective decisions,” said Assistant Principal George DiGiovanni. “By participating in a school-wide voting event, students learn valuable lessons in choice, democracy, and the importance of their voices in a community. It builds excitement for the upcoming School Spirit Day and strengthens the North Side community by uniting students, teachers, and staff around a shared activity.”

Through this hands-on experience, students gained a sense of ownership over a school tradition, building both school pride and a deeper understanding of democratic principles. The mock election was more than just a fun event; it served as a meaningful lesson in how each voice contributes to the collective spirit of North Side School.
