Residential Burglary Prevention Tips from the Nassau County Police Department
By Chris Orlando, Police Officer - 3rd Precinct POP Unit
In an effort to enhance community safety, the Nassau County Police Department has shared valuable tips to help residents protect their homes from potential burglaries. With proactive measures, homeowners can deter criminal activity and create a more secure environment for their families.
Key recommendations include:
Secure Entry Points: Always lock gates, windows, and doors. Install deadbolts on doors to prevent them from being pried open.
Store Valuables Safely: Keep valuable items out of sight, away from windows and common areas where they might be easily visible.
Enlist Neighbors’ Help: If you’re away, ask a trusted neighbor to bring in trashcans, collect newspapers, and pick up any packages. This helps create the impression that someone is home.
Lighting and Surveillance: Keep multiple indoor lights on and make sure outdoor lights are well-lit at night. Consider installing a security surveillance system and display alarm stickers on doors and windows as a deterrent.
Remove Garage Openers from Vehicles: Don’t leave garage door openers in cars parked in the driveway to prevent easy access to your home.
Verify Credentials: Before allowing utility workers or service providers into your home, always verify their identification.
If a burglary does occur, the Nassau County Police Department advises residents to call 911 immediately and avoid entering the premises, as the burglar may still be inside. To preserve evidence, do not disturb anything at the scene.
Remember: Be vigilant! If you see something, say something.
For emergencies or to report crimes in progress, call 911, and for anonymous tips, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
These preventive measures empower residents to create safer neighborhoods and support local law enforcement in their mission to protect the community.
