A talented group of young researchers from The Wheatley School, part of the East Williston Union Free School District, recently showcased their scientific expertise at two prominent science research symposiums, gaining recognition and accolades for their work.

On October 19, Divya Jayam represented her school at the Association of Chinese American Physicians’ Science Fair held at the Flushing Library. Competing on a national level, Divya presented her research, “The Use of Cephalexin to Inhibit Alpha-Synuclein Aggregation: A New Paradigm in Parkinson's Disease Therapy.” Her outstanding work earned her first place and a $2,000 prize. The ACAP Science Fair, which attracts middle and high school students from across the country, offers a platform for young minds to explore and share groundbreaking ideas in biomedicine, encouraging a passion for science among the next generation.

Three other Wheatley students, Autumn Casella, Maryam Hassan, and Shruti Singh, participated in the 2024 Hofstra University High School Summer Research Program Symposium on October 22. This event celebrates high school students who dedicated their summer to intensive research and provides an opportunity for them to present their findings to a broader audience. The symposium highlights students’ commitment to scientific discovery and learning beyond the classroom.

The achievements of these Wheatley students reflect the dedication and talent fostered within the East Williston School District, as well as the district’s support for scientific inquiry and innovation among its students. These young researchers have not only represented their school with distinction but have also demonstrated the power of curiosity, hard work, and a passion for advancing scientific knowledge.
