Students at The Wheatley School in the East Williston Union Free School District recently participated in a heartwarming project that united different classes and fostered connections through the Spanish language. Under the guidance of Mary Martinez, Spanish language students collaborated with Dr. Liza Laurino’s Life Skills class in a unique cultural exchange held in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

This two-part project celebrated both language and tradition. In the first lesson, Spanish students introduced their Life Skills peers to basic Spanish vocabulary, focusing on colors. To reinforce the new vocabulary, they engaged in a spirited game of bingo, making learning interactive and fun.

The second lesson delved into cultural traditions with an exploration of Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Students came together to color intricate velvet skulls, embracing an essential element of this Mexican holiday that honors loved ones who have passed. The activity allowed students to connect through shared creativity and cultural appreciation.

Both Spanish and Life Skills students expressed gratitude for the experience, and many looked forward to similar opportunities in the future. "This was an amazing opportunity to introduce foreign languages to the Life Skills students and teach them a little bit about Spanish culture," shared student Ayan Mahajan.

This collaboration highlighted the power of learning and connection across diverse subjects and students, fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates cultural heritage.
